Best concrete block building practice requires a mason to lay out the entire building in “block bond”. Block bond is accomplished when a mason starts at one point of the building and lays out the walls so that whole blocks are used completely around the structure and back to the starting block with a full block. The result is that when the block crosses over doors and windows, there continues to be a ‘running bond’.

The blue marks in this photo indicate that a full block will start in the far right corner and continue to the left. Full block are then used throughout except at door and window breaks, which will require the use of half block. The final full block will meet the initial block, completing the “block bond”.
